More than 40 mixed doubles players participated in the Vineyard Tennis Center, Workout and Spa’s 16th annual Turkey Open Tennis Tournament last weekend, with the winners receiving turkeys provided by Stop & Shop.
Gene Erez and Cathy Lattanzi won the Pilgrim draw over Kelly Hess and Steve Mussell with steady rallies and well-timed lobs. The duo beat Nate and Laureen Morgan in the semifinals 6-2, 6-0, and Peter and Sandy Lally in their opening round.
Leo McHugh and Michelle Bettencourt were the standouts in the consolation draw. They prevailed in a close match against Rich Kugler and Wander Sumner 2-6, 7-6, (10-5), and took the finals over Sandy and Peter Lally.
Sandy Nadelstein and Kelly Nagi gained momentum throughout the tournament to the finals of the Turkey draw. They won their first round against Skip Dostal and Lili Cooperrider 6-3, 6-2., and narrowly edged out Darren Belisle and Lucia Hayman in a tie-breaker, 4-6, 6-4, (10-6).
Nina Bramhall and Paul Schneider arrived in the semifinals edging out Deb Cooper and Ken Armstead 6-4, 6-7, (10-3). Another tie-breaker made Nina Bramhall and Paul Schneider champions as they came back in the end of their final match to bypass Mr. Nadelstein and Ms. Nagi 2-6, 6-4 (10-4)
All proceeds from the tournament benefit Doctors without Borders, which serves communities around the globe.
