The march to the postseason continued this week with split results; the boys’ basketball team secured an easy victory on Tuesday while the girls took a hard-fought loss. Both basketball squads need just one more win to clinch a spot in the postseason tournament. Meanwhile, the fledgling swim team, hampered by illness and injury, hosted Sacred Heart in a close meet on Monday, but ultimately came up short.
Boys’ Basketball
The boys basketball team soundly defeated visiting Dartmouth, a Division 1 opponent, at home on Tuesday afternoon, taking a 63-46 win. The Vineyarders held Dartmouth to just two points in the second quarter and led by 35 points at the half.
Two of Dartmouth’s players had been averaging 40 points per game between them, but the Vineyard defense allowed them only 10, head coach Mike Joyce noted after the game. Nine different Vineyard players scored for the team and all players came off the bench. Senior Jack Roberts led the scoring with 13 points. Senior Navardo Anderson scored 10, and seniors Jahmari Thomas and Izak Browne scored nine each, with Thomas slamming a dunk in on a rebound from junior Malik Johnson late in the third quarter. Senior Matt Marchand came in to the game late, but made his mark with two three-pointers.
“When we share the ball, when the ball gets passed around, it’s a whole different game,” coach Joyce said.
The team begins a five-game road series on Friday when they travel to Eastern Athletic Conference opponent Coyle and Cassidy. The boys
Girls' Basketball
The girls dropped their Tuesday game to Dartmouth 61-50 for only their second loss of the season. Down 22-9 after a slow first quarter, the team “came all the way back” to within one point of Dartmouth in the fourth quarter, head coach Lisa Stewart said. The teams went back and forth for much of the final quarter, but the Indians pulled away in the last three minutes for the win.
Junior Kat deBettencourt led scoring with 17 points, and seniors Maggie Riseborough and captain Katie Stewart had nine each.
The Vineyarders play at home against Coyle and Cassidy on Friday at 4:30 p.m. They are 9-2 on the season.
Swimming
The regional high school swim team took a narrow loss to visiting Sacred Heart on Monday, with the boys losing by just one point, 49-48, and the girls squad falling 71-66.
As was the case with the Vineyard’s previous swim meets, there were many events in which the team did not compete, as swimmers were out with injury or illness. Coach Robin Tuck O’Callaghan said she was reluctant to exhaust the remaining swimmers by entering them in the longer distance events, as this preliminary season is more about mastering technique.
In spite of the smaller squad, the Vineyard proved competitive with their opponents. The boys picked up five first-place wins, winning the 200-metre medley relay and the 200-metre free relay in addition to earning individual victories. Sophomore Derik Devine placed first in the 50-metre freestyle (25:72), and Freshman Tucker Cosgrove was first in the 100-metre butterly (1:10:02). Senior Liam Cosgrove took first in the 100-metre backstroke; junior Patrick McCarthy was second in the 100-metre breaststroke.
The girls’ team also placed first in the 200-metre medley relay, and won the 400-metre freestyle relay. Sophomore Galya Walt, freshman Kate Hansen, and junior Mariah Campbell swept the 100-metre freestyle, while Campbell and sophomore Alistair Rizza went one-two in the 100-metre breaststroke. Hansen also placed first in the 200 freestyle.
Wednesday’s scheduled meet against Sandwich was postponed to a later date.
