Martha’s Vineyard Film Center in Vineyard Haven is naming its theatre space in honor of Baltimore philanthropist Marilyn Meyerhoff, who has given the largest-ever donation to the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society, founder and director Richard Paradise said Thursday.
Mr. Paradise declined to disclose the amount of the gift, but said it was a multi-year commitment that would “provide sustenance for the coming decade and ensures that the MV Film Society will flourish.”
Founded in 2002, the film society opened its film center in September 2012 after an eight-month fundraising effort. The center, which is open year-round, includes a 177-seat theatre space, featuring a 26-foot screen, stadium seating, and DCI projection. It is the theatre space that will be named for Ms. Meyerhoff; other donors have made possible the construction and operation of other aspects of the theatre, he said.
Ms. Meyerhoff is a longtime patron of the arts, serving on the board of the American Visionary Art Museum. The Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, home of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, is named after Ms. Meyerhoff’s late husband.
Mr. Paradise said the funds would be used to finance ongoing operations of the center, including new educational programs it plans to introduce this year.
