The driver who allegedly caused a Fourth of July car accident in Edgartown will be charged with drunken driving, Edgartown police said this week, while one of his passengers, a 21-year-old New York man, was was taken to a Boston hospital with severe head injuries and later released.

Sean E. Law, 22, of the Bronx, N.Y., will be charged with drunken driving, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and marked lanes violation, Edgartown police chief Antone Bettencourt said Monday. Mr. Law will be summonsed to the courthouse for arraignment.

Mr. Law was driving a black Audi sedan that crashed into a Tisbury Taxi on Meshacket Road just after 5 p.m. on Thursday, police said. Mr. Law and a passenger in the front seat of the Audi, and the two people in the taxi were taken to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and released.

An unrestrained passenger in the backseat of the Audi, Dyllan Gibbs, 21, of New York, N.Y., had a severe head injury and was med-flighted to a Boston hospital, assistant fire chief Alex Schaeffer said.

A spokesperson for Massachusetts General Hospital said that Mr. Gibbs was released from the hospital on Saturday.

Mr. Bettencourt said that prior to the accident, the Audi was traveling toward the Edgartown-West Tisbury Road and Morning Glory Farm. In the area of the old landfill, he said, the Audi passed Oak Bluffs police chief Erik Blake, who was driving in an unmarked vehicle. The Audi was traveling at “a high rate of speed,” Chief Bettencourt said, estimated at 60 miles per hour.

Chief Blake then witnessed the Audi sideswipe a Hummer going in the other direction, Chief Bettencourt said, and as the Audi turned around a corner it collided head-on with a Tisbury Taxi going in the other direction.

The accident occurred during what Chief Bettencourt called one of the busiest Fourth of July holidays in memory for the police and fire departments. Assistant chief Schaeffer said that the fire department received 11 medical calls in a 10-hour period, and treated 24 patients.
