The Harlem Quartet returns to the Vineyard with two concerts, July 15 at 8 p.m. at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown and on July 16 at 8 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center. The Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society is producing the event.

The quartet recently performed during a tour of South Africa and will perform a wide-ranging program including works by Haydn, Schubert and jazz pianist and composer Chick Corea. The New York-based ensemble is made up of seasoned solo artists who have appeared with the Boston Pops, the New York Philharmonic and several symphony orchestras around the U.S. They performed for President Obama in 2009 and appeared on the Today Show on Christmas morning. Made up of violinists Ilmar Gavilan, Melissa White and Jaime Amador, and cellist Matthew Zalkind, the Harlem Quartet was founded in 2006.

In keeping with the chamber music society’s efforts to promote Island-grown music and performers, the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Scholarship Award will be presented to Oliva de Geofroy at the beginning of the July 15 concert. Ms. de Geofroy is the daughter of Karen Overtoom and Louis de Geofroy of West Tisbury. She will attend Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J. in the fall. Ms. de Geofroy will sing prior to the Harlem Quartet’s performance.
