John Clift has been the sommelier at Atria Restaurant for the past 10 years. He studied at the Wine Academy of Rome, and each winter he wanders the world seeking out the best wines. Last year he opened Vintage MV Wine and Spirits in Edgartown. To make a long story short, the man knows his wine. He also seems to lead a life that makes most green with envy. But instead of gnashing the teeth, it is far more civilized, and enjoyable, to join him and enjoy the fruits of his labors.

On Thursday, May 8, through Sunday, May 11, Mr. Clift will hold his second annual wine festival here on the Island. On Thursday night there are three events — a kick off dinner at Atria, a dinner and tasting from Frogs Leap winery at the Charlotte Inn, and a Wild Food Dinner presented by Billy Manson, host each year of the Wild Food Challenge, at a private home.

On Friday there are two events — one at Atria and one at a private home. And on Saturday there are four more events — the VIP tasting from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Rod and Gun Club, dinner at the Boathouse, dinner at Detente and dinner at a private home. The events conclude on Sunday with a Mother’s Day brunch.

The event is a benefit for the Boys and Girls Club of Martha’s Vineyard.
