Tisbury voters narrowly approved their first general budget override in more than two decades at the annual town election Tuesday.
The ballot question passed by just 21 votes, with 367 voters in favor of the override, and 349 against.
The $1.3 million override covers a $1.1 million budget deficit for fiscal year 2015 and puts $185,000 into stabilization funds for several town departments. Voters approved a $23.2 million operating budget at their annual town meeting two weeks ago.
A total of 770 voters came to the polls, about 21 per cent of 3,702 registered voters.
Town clerk Marion Mudge presided over her final election after 30 years on the job. Ms. Mudge is retiring this year, and new town clerk Hillary Conklin will take her place. Ms. Conklin won at the polls over opponent Barbara Lampson, 404 to 346.
Ms. Conklin said she was speechless after learning she had won. “It’s such a responsibility and I’m so honored that people had the confidence to vote for me,” she told the Gazette after the results were announced Tuesday. Ms. Conklin has been the administrative secretary to the board of selectmen for the past 16 years.
In other races, Melinda Loberg was elected without contest to a three-year term on the board of selectmen with 598 votes. She will take the seat of outgoing selectman Jeffrey Kristal, who opted not to seek a third term on the board.
Re-elected without contest were Deborah Medders, moderator, 608 (top vote getter); Roy Cutrer, board of assessors, 572 ; Janet Packer, school committee, 582; David Schwab, water commissioner, 594; Marilyn Wortman, library trustee, 593; Leo DeSorcy, public works commissioner, 506; Jynell Kristal, finance and advisory committee, 437; and Mary Ellen Larsen, finance and advisory committee, 540.
Elected to new terms without contest were Jeffrey Pratt, board of health, 578; Cheryl Doble, planning board, 536; George Balco, public works commissioner, 442; Jeffrey Kristal, public works commission, 437; and John (Tony) Nevin, Land Bank commissioner, 520.
Two write-in positions for a three-year term on the board of library trustees were filled by Carolyn Henderson (50 votes) and Akeyah Nunes (17 votes). A one-year term on the library board was also filled via write-in. Nora Nevin received 26 votes.
Five seats on the finance and advisory committee had no candidate and were filled via write-in vote. Larry Gomez, a former committee chair, received 36 votes for a three-year term on the committee, 15 votes for a two-year term, and 7 votes for a one-year term. Jeffrey Kristal received 12 votes for a three-year term and 8 votes for a one-year term.
Despite the write-ins, three seats remain vacant, and the finance committee and board of selectmen will meet to appoint members.
A non-binding resolution asking Governor Deval Patrick to close down the Pilgrim nuclear power plant in Plymouth was approved 507-179.
