Car Strikes Utility Pole A Los Angeles man was arrested on drunken driving charges early Sunday morning after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a utility pole, police said.
Oak Bluffs police said Franklin S. Ayala, 26, was charged with drunken driving, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation and speeding after his 2014 Dodge Durango rental vehicle allegedly hit a utility pole on Lake avenue in Oak Bluffs. Mr. Ayala was transported to a Boston area hospital because of his injuries, police said.
A statement from police said witnesses observed the Dodge Durango traveling at a high rate of speed, estimated at more than 70 miles per hour, as it traveled toward Vineyard Haven on Lake avenue. Mr. Ayala, who was operating the vehicle, allegedly lost control at the corner near Dukes County avenue. The vehicle skidded across Lake avenue and struck a concrete fence pillar and a utility pole, police said, adding that the obstructions prevented the Durango from going into Sunset Pond.
Police, fire and emergency personnel were dispatched at 1:45 a.m., police said. Mr. Ayala allegedly parked the vehicle at the Our Market parking lot.
The car had severe damage on the driver’s side, police said, and all the air bags deployed. Mr. Ayala displayed signs of alcohol intoxication, according to police, and was taken to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital for medical evaluation. He was placed under arrest at the hospital, police said, and then released on personal recognizance by the bail commissioner before being transported off-Island to the hospital.
An arraignment scheduled for August 18 was continued to Sept. 2.
