As always we had a wonderful time on Martha’s Vineyard from August 16 to 23, a time we choose because of the Agricultural Fair.

And the fair was great — the oxen pull, the 4-H awardees, the border collie demonstrations, etc.

Except for one thing: Robinson’s Racing Pigs have been replaced (temporarily, I hope) by the Ring-Tailed Racing Lemurs. The crowd was smaller, and the lemurs were lackadaisical. Plus, there is something a bit unseemly about an endangered primate running for a speck of banana.

The Racing Pigs are an enthusiastic lot, especially when it comes to swimming. It is a democratic process — the winner gets a whole Oreo and the losers still get Oreo crumbs. I have not heard of any complaints of unfairness from the contestants.

We miss Tammy Swinette, Tammy Faye Bacon and their colleagues. Bring them back!
