West Tisbury volunteer firefighters spent several hours on election night dousing a brush fire in a stump pit off Old Stage Road.

The call came in just before 8 p.m. Tuesday of a fire at John Keene Excavation, police lieutenant Matt Mincone said. West Tisbury trucks responded and mutual aid came from Chilmark, Aquinnah and Tisbury, fire chief Manuel Estrella 3rd said. Tri-Town Ambulance set up a command post and the American Red Cross assisted for on-site support to the firemen. One fireman was taken to the hospital with a headache, but no injuries were reported.

Mr. Estrella said the cause of the fire was likely from a cigarette that had been tossed in a stump pile earlier, later catching fire with the brush.

About 30 firefighters responded to the scene, he said.

“Everyone did an excellent job. We probably flowed between 250,000 and 300,000 gallons of water. That’s a lot of water. They shuttled water all night long,” the chief said.

The scene was cleared just after 1 a.m., police said.
