The Martha’s Vineyard Rod & Gun Club’s 14th annual Black Powder Championship will be held this Sunday, Dec. 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This shoot is before the primitive firearm deer season opens on the Island. Members and the public are invited to participate.

The muzzle-loading marksmanship competition gives Island black powder shooters an opportunity to sight in their ancient guns and hone their shooting skills before going out into the field. The events involve loading, shooting and reloading for accuracy and points. There will be two firearm classifications as well as prizes for both traditional and modern muzzleloaders. Scopes are allowed. Competitors will vie for hams that have been donated by Cronig’s markets and other prizes for the various events.

The Rod and Gun Club is located off the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road at 3rd street. Follow 3rd street to the end; take a right and the very next left into the club’s driveway.
