We understand that the Little Bridge channel at Sengekontacket Pond is being dredged this June. Liz Durkee in her excellent article in last Friday’s Gazette said that the sand from this dredging would be suitable for nourishment of Pay Beach and Inkwell Beach.
The fact that there is such a supply of sand in the channel so that it is totally occluded, severely compromising the flushing of the pond, is nothing short of scandalous.
The health of the pond at this time depends on flushing via the two bridge channels. With the present total occlusion of Little Bridge channel, the nitrogen levels and bacterial counts are sure to rise with the advent of warmer weather and increased human population. We look forward to seeing LIttle Bridge channel once again filled with water instead of sand.
