It is a big week for words on the Vineyard. One could say that all summer long, but this week two Vineyard authors, whose reputations are not limited to these shores by any means, take the stage.

On Saturday, July 11, Geraldine Brooks reads from The Secret Chord, her latest novel which will be published this fall. Audiences at the Noepe Center for Literary Arts, located at 104 Main street, Edgartown, will get a sneak preview of what everyone else will have to wait a few months for. The book takes its title from the Leonard Cohen song Hallelujah, and is a fictional take on the life of biblical King David.

The event is $25, with proceeds to benefit Noepe scholarships. Call 508-560-0467.

On Tuesday, July 14, another heavy hitter takes a different stage. David McCullough will talk about his new book, The Wright Brothers, at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury. The evening begins at 7 p.m. and tickets are $100, to benefit the West Tisbury Library Foundation. Call 508-696-9539.

Mr. McCullough will also be signing copies of his book on Thursday, July 16, at The Bunch of Grapes Bookstore, 35 Main street, Vineyard Haven, from 7 to 9 p.m.
