Regarding Jim Malkin’s article in the commentary section of the July 17 Vineyard Gazette titled “No Fids, Gimbals or Lockers? No Thanks!” It should be noted that a fid is a pointed tool used to separate strands of rope in order to splice. He confuses that with a fiddle which is the wooden raised edge of a shelf or table on a vessel that prevents items from sliding off in a seaway.
