The hunting has begun — fishing and squirrelling for sure, but hopefully not skunking. But you never know at the Wild Food Challenge, now in its sixth year on the Island.

The event is Sunday, Oct. 11, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Portuguese-American Club in Oak Bluffs. Competitors and children get free entry. All others pay $20. The admission price gets you all the nettles and grasshopper fritters you can ask.

The rules are simple — make a dish with at least one locally foraged ingredient. But to win the event, odds are you will need to dig quite a bit deeper than one simple homegrown ingredient. That’s where the squirrels and insects enter the picture.

Get creative, get wild or simply stop by to enjoy the show. Top chefs from all over the Island will be throwing down their reputations alongside expert hunter/gatherers who know the exact locations of the tastiest Island morsels you never knew existed.
