Well I think I have finally figured it out, Mother Nature is having hot flashes. It has to be the answer because one minute you are freezing and the next you can’t stand all the clothes you have on and are stripping down. It is the same way when you are sleeping. You go to bed all nice and nestled into your blankets and the next minute you are throwing them back and opening the window because it is 30 degrees warmer than when you went to bed. Oh well, that is nature for you.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Braylin Hattingh and Nathan London who celebrated Oct. 24; Emily Crowell on Oct. 25; Hyago Silva on Oct. 26; Arthur Avansini, Isabella Burns, Mason Burns, Noah Burns, Highly Marsh and Bruno Munoz, who all celebrated Oct. 27; Sydney Bruguiere and Tobias Russell Schaeffer on Oct. 29; Lillie Cabral on Oct. 30; and to Joshua Brown who celebrates his day Oct. 31.

Well I am sure you have all noticed the scarecrows by all the businesses in town. I just read that the charter school has created a record number of more than 90 scarecrows from Chilmark to Edgartown. The charter school does this every year and they are always very funny or scary and very town appropriate. If you have not yet seen them give yourself a treat and go out and look at these displays. These kids are very talented.

Kara Shemeth, Nedine Cunningham (Edgartown junior high school teacher), Marcy Bettencourt, Eleasha Dhein from Wisconsin and a member of the Amity Island Running Club, and Joellen BenDavid all were in Washington D.C. for the 40th Marine Corps Marathon, also known as The People’s Marathon. This marathon use to be run by the Marines, but it became so big that they now have a full-time staff. More than 30,000 people now run it.

The mission of the MCM, which starts and ends at Arlington National Cemetery, is to promote physical fitness, generate community goodwill and show the organizational skills of the United States Marine Corps. Congratulations to all for a great trip and running a very worthwhile event.

This past weekend Ellen and Mark Blodgett went to Vermont for a mini vacation that they won at an auction. So, I had their daughter Ella and we took care of their dogs and cats and two ponies. We had fun going back and forth, and listening to my instructions from Ella who is nine going on 33 and is very aware of her responsibilities to her animals. I sometimes forget that I am with a young lady and not someone my own age as our conversations get very interesting.

She has the whole schedule down pat and the horses know her every move. It took me back to my horse days and even though the work is hard it is also so therapeutic. I would be at the barn cleaning stalls and getting out all my frustrations and laughing at different things, and the horses are the best listeners.

Also, the smell of the horses on your clothes and hair are the best smells. I always remember Nancy Leighton, who ran Bittersweet Farm for years, would come into the A&P, yes not the Stop & Shop, after doing barn chores and I would always call her to my lane so I could get a whiff of the horse smell. She thought I was nuts but she also understood.

Anyway, Ella and her mom ride every weekend and I can only hope she has all the best experiences her mother and I have had with horses.

Two big things this weekend — Halloween — and all the ghosts and goblins will be out so drive carefully and be mindful of all the kids. Also, it is time to turn your clocks back, one more hour of sleep in the morning, lighter mornings and darker evenings.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
