Although Thanksgiving has just ended and the turkey leftovers are still prominently taking over the refrigerator, it is now time to turn to the Christmas season. No, it is not Black Friday to be discussed now, that odd, sharp-elbowed adrenaline rush of materialism. Rather, it is something quieter, more small town, more hot chocolate and good cheer, with neighbors standing arm in arm that we speak of.

Welcome once again to the Oak Bluffs Tree Lighting, the annual green light for all things Christmas to begin in earnest. Ladies and gentlemen, light your lights and deck your halls with mistletoe, but first head to Post Office Square in Oak Bluffs on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 6:30 p.m. As per usual the Vineyard Brass Ensemble will add to the scene. So will free antlers, caroling and a visit from Santa. The Brian Weiland band will entertain after the lighting.

The event is free, but everyone is asked to bring an item for the food pantry.
