Usually my far-better-half Sally has a chance to proofread this column before it goes out the door. Along with grammar she checks for goofiness. Unfortunately for you and me, last week she was busy on the big island with her own activities at the moment of my submission deadline. So I have to take full responsibility for the meals on wheels joke.

Whenever a new Meals on Wheels volunteer comes along I make them listen to that joke. What a polite bunch of folks! I always get a pleasant smile but I can also sense a little bit of pity aimed my way. I don’t blame them for feeling sorry for me that the mice-on-roller-skates joke was taking up precious space in my brain.

When I first began writing the Chappy column I tried to cultivate the habit that as soon as I sent a column in, I would start immediately on the next column. I would make an outline of the subjects to cover. I would even send out some email inquiries. However, I have been able to hone my procrastination skills practically to a science. Now-a-days I often don’t get started on typing the column until a couple of hours before my deadline. I do receive emails and hear gossip all week that I start to organize in my head. I even do some investigative research — if you can call taking the dogs for a walk at Wasque research.

Last week I went into great detail about the Spring Egg Hunt with no mention of the date. So let’s try this again but with the date of Saturday March 26 mentioned. Liz Villard will again host the Spring Egg Hunt at the community center. The hunt starts promptly at 3 p.m. Be on time as the hunting takes mere minutes. Stick around after for tea and cookies. Call the CCC at 508-627-8222 if you have questions. See you Saturday March 26! Bring a basket for collecting eggs.

Woody Filley has asked me to pass on a request from Comcast. If Comcast has not already contacted you about scheduling service installation at your house, get in touch with them. Email or call Mike or Ralph to set a date for your “SRO” walk through. The walkthrough takes a short period of time but is essential for Comcast to start the process for final installation of services in your home. Contact Michael_Harney@cable.comcast.com, 508-431-3360 or Ralph_Cistoldi@cable.comcast.com, 508-207-7087. They prefer email but both are happy to talk on the phone. I urge you or your caretaker to do this right away. Comcast installers can only do a certain number of jobs per day and once summer is here there will be a tremendous backup. Call or email now to insure having service when you arrive this summer.

During the next five weeks I will continue to remind you about the ferry slip repairs scheduled for the school vacation week in April. For a period of eight days the ferry will only carry passengers. The loading ramp on the Chappy side will be removed first thing in the morning on Sunday April 17 and will be back in place by Sunday April 24 at 6 p.m. Passengers will be carried during the entire time. Read the full notice on either the Chappy ferry website or Facebook page.

The Slip Away farmers are preparing for a busy growing season. They are looking to hire someone for a part-time position during June, July and August for 10 to 15 hours per week. This person would help primarily with harvesting vegetables but may also be involved in field planting and weeding. No previous farm experience is required. Applicants must be at least 16 years old, able to lift 40 pounds and be comfortable with labor intensive work in the sun. Wow, talk about a great item for your resume!

If you can’t make that kind of commitment but want to have a chance to get out into those beautiful Slip Away flower fields they are also looking for one or two dedicated volunteers to help out one day per week during July and August to help with flower harvesting. You may also get a chance at vegetable harvesting. Again, you must be able to work in the sun in a labor-intensive job. Contact Slip Away at 508-627-7465 or slipawayfarm@gmail.com. Follow farm events on Instagram: @slipawayfarm.

The next Chappy potluck will be hosted by Martha Weston on Wednesday March 16 at 6 p.m.

Breaking news from Wasque: the swan pond was created last weekend when wash-over waves filled the narrow part of the old channel with sand. Now all we need are some swans.
