Spring is in the air as are the allergens associated with all that blossoms. Dogwoods are starting to bloom, displaying their magnificence. The temperatures have hovered in the 40s and 50s this week with overcast skies. It appears that the snow has finally ended. At least we can hope it has.
With the fertilizer regulations adopted last year by each town’s board of health. the spring awakening (slowly) seems like a pretty good time to remind Islanders to make sure that their use of lawn fertilizers is in compliance with those regulations. It matters because lawn fertilizers are one of the contributors to our Island ponds’ bad report card. If you apply fertilizer yourself, you can find the regulations for each town by going to the MV Boards of Health website, mvboh.org. Once there, click on lawn fertilizer initiative and choose your town. If you use a landscaping service, they are required to take the fertilizer course and obtain a license from the town they do business in. It is in your best interest as a homeowner to ask the person in charge questions like, “What are your plans for fertilizer use on my property? How much do you plan to apply and how often?” If they don’t know the answer to those questions, they likely have not been trained and shouldn’t be doing the work. For more information reach out to your Board of Health department.
