With the coming retirement of harbor master Jay Wilbur, Vineyard Haven Harbor will be losing its caretaker and staunchest advocate. Throughout his stewardship, Jay has implemented programs and changes that have dramatically improved the harbor while maintaining the character and charm for which it is renowned. Those of us old enough to remember the distinct odor which previously emanated from the harbor and the layer of sludge on the harbor bottom are delighted they are both now distant memories. The opening of the north end of the breakwater and the pump out program have been widely credited for this marked improvement in harbor water quality. Two of the most visible impacts Jay has made are the reorganization of the town mooring fields and the addition of bathrooms and showers to Owen Park. These two changes brought desperately needed order and amenities for visiting boaters, beachgoers and town residents. But perhaps his most lasting legacy will be left with his staff. Those who returned year after year during high school and college were well schooled in the workings of the harbor, it’s history and its relevance. Jay was always dedicated to the harbor and imparted a respect and appreciation for it to his employees. I can say without reservation that my successes are due in no small part to the skills and work ethic that Jay instilled. Working for Jay was the best job I have ever had and I have fond memories of the nine years I spent working for him. I have nothing but well wishes for his future endeavors and will miss seeing him on my trips back to the Island.

He will surely leave Vineyard Haven harbor a better place than he found it.
