Only on Martha’s Vineyard:

Saturday last, I headed to the West Tisbury dump, failing to secure properly a sheaf of at least 50 eight-by-eleven edited papers of an article my daughter had been working on. Looking out my rear view mirror as I headed east on North Road, to my dismay I watched the papers scatter to the wind like so many white birds. I stopped my truck, wondering how I would ever pick them all up. I needn’t have worried. The first car going by stopped, then the second, and the third, and the fourth, then the fifth. Within minutes, the roadside was clear, and all the paper was securely tucked under my bottle recycling bags as it should have been in the first place.

Thank you to all the good folks traveling on North Road at noon on Saturday, April 9. I think we got them all, but if you see a paper or two on North Road near Seven Gates Farm, please spare me any further embarrassment and do pick them up.
