The weather this past week may have been cold and dreary but spirits are rather warmed with many great feats along the way. Jim Malkin and Chuck Hodgkinson won their elections. Randall Jette, a former MVRHS football star, has signed on with the Green Bay Packers. Chris Fischer won a prestigious James Beard award for his Beetlebung Farm Cookbook. Congratulations and happy retirement to Jonathan Mayhew. The Red Sox are winning!
Reminder: the annual Aquinnah town meeting will be held on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the town hall. Election day is on Wednesday, May 11. The polls open at noon.
After three and a half weeks, I finally made it to the new Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank at Beetlebung Corner. The landscaped grounds are beautiful. The interior is well-appointed with fine furniture, and the artwork decorating the walls is by Chilmark School students. There will be an open house Friday afternoon, which I thought was in honor of Tim Carroll’s birthday but have been informed otherwise.
At the Aquinnah public library, story time is at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday May 7. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be coloring of images inspired by nature. Also Saturday from 10 to 4 a librarian will be at the Mini Maker Faire making books with kids! Be sure to print out your free tickets before the event.
Some other upcoming events this month include on Saturday, May 14 from noon to 2, Lisa Vanderhoop will provide tips on how best to photograph your dogs. The Martha’s Vineyard Cancer Support Group is sponsoring a 5K mother’s day fun run to raise both awareness and resources and to strengthen our community by doing something fun together. It is a fun run/walk so in addition to runners, walkers, strollers, and dogs are all welcome. Due to the generous sponsors covering operating costs all the money from this event will be directly donated to the cancer support group. This means 100 per cent of participant registration fees directly fund support groups and financial assistance to those dealing with cancer on Martha’s Vineyard.
The inaugural Run Breast Cancer Out of Town fun run begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 7 at the corner of Atlantic Drive and Herring Creek Road (right fork) and there will be plenty of parking available at the lot on Herring Creek Road. Register at runsignup.com/Race/MA/Edgartown/RunBreastCancerOutofTown or visit Rosewater Market.
Fossil Fred (Fred Hotchkiss) would like to invite one and all to Felix Neck on May 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. to learn how to volunteer to monitor horseshoe crabs during breeding season. For information, please call 508-627-4850.
Changes in the crew at U.S. Coast Guard Station Menemsha include the arrival of Miss McKenna of Plymouth. Riley Dreaney finished his watch after a night out on Vineyard Sound. Riley will still be around Menemsha all summer but is officially honorably discharged. All the best to Eric Tavares who transferred out on Monday and will be stationed in Virginia. Being the political science whiz that he is, being close to Washington D.C. is where he really wants to be. Eric and Amanda Havercamp were recently engaged, Amanda being discharged from Station Menemsha in October 2015. We will miss them but know they will return as they have Massachusetts ties. In the meantime, thank you immensely to Irv Purington, Joseph Queen, Jesse Cisneros, and Joshua Hughes for their assistance this past week.
Joan LeLacheur will host a Mother’s Day open studio on Saturday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. featuring gifts of wampum jewelry in combination with abalone, conch, and mosaic tiles. The studio is at 42 Old South Road, and call 508-645-9954 for more information.

Jenna Petersiel is pleased to announce that she will be opening the Chilmark Tavern on May 17. It is not too early to make reservations.
Get well wishes to Jane Slater who was rushed to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital after speaking at the annual town meeting. We believe she did get her point across prior to her departure via ambulance.
Sincerest condolences to family and friends of Louise T. Davies who passed away on April 26. Louise was a long time coworker at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Kendra Frakes, former receptionist at the Vineyard Gazette. It was always a pleasure to speak with Kendra each week in the days when I would fax my column over, rather than email as is the current practice. A memorial service will be held for Kendra on the Vineyard next month.
Happy Mother’s Day.
Happy 50th birthday wishes today to Chilmark executive secretary Timothy Carroll.
