Island veterans who sacrificed their lives during the Viet Nam war, and those who returned home to a welcome that history has judged inadequate, were honored Monday evening with a wreath-laying ceremony in front of the Edgartown courthouse.
About a dozen veterans and their families, as well as members of the Marthas’s Vineyard Seacoast Defense Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), gathered under the late afternoon sun in front of a monument that honors Viet Nam era veterans along with those active in other conflicts.
Cindy Krauss, regent of the DAR, thanked Viet Nam veterans for their service.
“It is with profound appreciation that we lay a wreath this evening to honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives, including those who are listed as missing in action,” said Ms. Krauss. “We thank you who fought and were able to return home to us, some of whom are gathered here with us. We thank you for your valor, your service and your sacrifice.”
Viet Nam veteran Tom Bennett spoke on behalf of the veterans.
“Some gave their lives, others served as they were called,” Mr. Bennett said. “All subjected themselves to the hardship of training, and carrying out the mission asked of them. It is our hope going forward, that communities throughout the land will always honor and welcome home all those who serve our country, now and forever more.”
A wreath of red, white and blue flowers was laid at the base of the bronze and stone memorial.
Ms. Krauss said Monday’s ceremony is part of a three year effort to recognize the service of Viet Nam veterans 50 years after the conflict began.
