The weekend weather was swell after some rain. The Father’s Day weather forecast is for a reasonably good day but Dad will relax at least for one day, no matter what the weather is. Also he will not have to clean up after dinner even if it is a backyard cookout. The summer season officially begins on Monday. Yes, traffic jams in Vineyard Haven have already begun.

Fred and Jeanne Baron, of Campbell Road, returned home last Thursday after spending the winter in California. Along with them was their newest grandchild, Mila Joyce Biroscak, on her first visit to the Island. She was accompanied by her parents, Maggie and Jesse, who were married at the Barrons’ home three years ago and now live in San Francisco.

William Eger, of Stonewood Lane, married Dr. Maren Shapiro last Saturday at the Allen Farm in Chilmark.

Dick and Diana Reishe, of Runner Road and Wilton, Conn.. have returned to their summer home on Town Cove. Dick reports that it is great to be back and looks forward to a busy summer.

Bob and Barbara Levine, of Sarasota, Fla., have returned from their winter holiday to their home on the Great Pond.

Dr. Sara Rosenthal and Dr. Julie Prazich and their cat Alice of San Diego, Calif. are vacationing at their house in the Cove. Sara plans on spending most of July around the house.

Holly Hodder Eger reports that she has written a novel, Split Rock, and it will be available shortly on Amazon. She is doing a book talk at the library July 14 at 5 p.m. She will tell you that the book takes place on the Vineyard, mostly up-Island, in 1997. A minor character is yours truly dispensing advice from the mail room in Alley’s Store. In the movie version she expects that Robert Redford will play my part.

There were several weddings last weekend. Sonya Wilson and Brisard Raymond were married on Menemsha Beach and Tania Abedian and Chris Coke were also married in Menemsha. I presided over both ceremonies.

The First Congregational Church of West Tisbury’s 28th annual Strawberry Festival will be held Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. I can remember Joe and Sally Kraetzer, members of the church who were instrumental in starting the event. The church welcomes you to enjoy all sorts of strawberry treats, plus special “to go” Father’s Day treats and a raffle for something special. Look for the strawberry banner and bright balloons on the church fence. All proceeds help support this historic church. The festival will be indoors in the event of inclement weather.

The parks and recreation committee reports that beach stickers will be available starting Saturday and every weekday thereafter from 9 to 1 p.m. and weekends from 4 to 7 p.m. at the shed near the tennis courts at the school. Stickers will be required as the beach opens with lifeguards next Saturday. For further information call 508-696-0147.

Amy Hoff, over at the library, reports that on Tuesday, June 28, at 7 p.m., the West Tisbury Library Foundation will host a discussion with Geoffrey Cowan and Tweed Roosevelt. Mr. Cowan will speak about his newly published book, Let the People Rule: Theodore Roosevelt and the Birth of the Presidential Primary. He will then have a conversation with Tweed Roosevelt, president of the Theodore Roosevelt Association and great-grandson of President Roosevelt, about President Roosevelt’s role in dramatically increasing the number of presidential primaries.

Father’s Day is on Sunday. Its origin dates back to near the beginning of the last century. President Calvin Coolidge made it a national day and President Lyndon Johnson signed it into law with a presidential proclamation. A Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there.
