Here we are at summer weather, hot and sometimes humid. We experienced some nice cool much needed rainy weather. I know some people did not really like it but we needed it.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Matthew Fish, Emily Gilley, Erin Gilley and Thais Pereira, who all celebrated July 9; Amy Maeda, July 10, Madeline Chronister, July 13; Hugo Burrows, MacKenzie Searle and Katelyn Tankersley, July 14; and to Catherine Cherry, who celebrates her day July 15.

Last week before the parade started I walked around to look at the other participants and as I was walking down the road, this police officer was walking towards me from another town. Now I didn’t know this man and he was big, muscular and looking very businesslike. He was young and I tried to figure out if I knew him, and as he got closer his phone rang. He looked at me as he got closer and nodded, he answered his phone and his face changed and he said “Hi Mom.” I couldn’t help but smile and he looked at my face and he sort of smirked.

Now in the whole aftermath of this past week, we live safely in our communities because of these men. Some are senior officers, and some have been with the departments for a few years, and then there are those who have just graduated and are starting their careers as a servant of our communities. I for one am very thankful to them, and we have to remember they are someone’s father, someone’s husband, someone’s son. Most of all he is a somebody and his life does matter.

The Edgartown Council on Aging, also known as the Anchors, is seeking Edgartown residents as new volunteer board members to advise and supervise the COA, which is a department of the town of Edgartown providing services, events, activities and programs to Edgartown and Island elders. The board meets once a month, 10 months out of the year, to provide support and guidance. The meetings are pleasant, fun, interesting and no longer than an hour and a half. Pastries, coffee and refreshments are provided. Please call Paul Mohair, administrator, at 508-627-4368 for more information.

The Edgartown Lighthouse visitor guides are looking for help between the hours of 12 to 4 p.m. daily except Saturdays for the rest of the summer. If you are interested, contact Betsey Mayhew (bmayhew@mvmuseum.org or 508-627-4441, ext 112) or visit the lighthouse daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Now that the warm weather is upon us, please take notice of our four legged friends and make sure they have shade and lots of water.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
