It’s not at the top of the agenda, but when the Steamship Authority holds its monthly meeting on Martha's Vineyard Tuesday, the retirement of general manager Wayne Lamson will top the news. The SSA meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Oak Bluffs library.

Mr. Lamson took the helm at the boat line in December 2004. He began working for the SSA as a ticket taker while he was in college, eventually working his way up to auditor and then comptroller. He served as interim general manager five times before being named general manager.

“I can’t think of a better Christmas present to give the Steamship Authority and our customers than Wayne Lamson,” said Flint Ranney, the late Nantucket governor and chairman of the board, when he announced Mr. Lamson had been named general manager on Dec. 23, 2004.

Mr. Lamson plans to retire in June 2017.

The Tuesday business agenda for the boat line board includes an update on the new ferry Woods Hole which began service last month, a planned mid-life refurbishment project for the ferry Martha’s Vineyard, and discussion of public comments on a draft report that examines the feasibility of running freight service between New Bedford and the Vineyard. Issued in April, the lengthy preliminary report cites numerous obstacles, including the cost of running the service and inadequate infrastructure in New Bedford.

Also on Tuesday, draft operating schedules for the coming year will be unveiled.

And a preliminary discussion of a transition plan and search for a new general manager will be a new business matter for the board.
