Hunting season will get underway next week on the Vineyard. Archery season begins Oct. 17 and runs through Nov. 26, followed by shotgun season from Nov. 28 to Dec. 10 and primitive firearms from Dec. 12 to Dec. 31.

Hunting hours are from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. No hunting is allowed on Sundays.

All hunters must wear 500 square inches of hunter orange on their head, chest, and back during shotgun and primitive firearms seasons. Walkers are advised to use caution, wear bright colors, and stick to known trails during hunting season.

Check stations are at the Wampanoag Tribal Council, 20 Black Brook Road in Aquinnah; Larry’s Tackle Shop, 258 Upper Main street in Edgartown; and in the state forest at fire road 56.

Last year 607 deer were harvested on Martha’s Vineyard: 329 in shotgun season, 208 in archery season, and 82 with primitive weapons.
