As a retired educator, I urge readers to vote no on ballot question two on Nov. 8. Corporate America is funding the expensive campaign to support the expansion of charter schools. On the Vineyard we are blessed to have an exceptional charter school. But in most inner cities the charter school movement has established charter schools that are established to make a profit. These schools siphon money away from our public schools ($14 million in Massachusetts just last year). They restrict the number of special education students and children with behavioral issues. They teach using canned programs from the test prep corporations which are making exorbitant profits off the backs of our children and grandchildren. Public education is the bedrock of our democracy. We need to take a stand to make all of our public schools be excellent vehicles for a comprehensive and excellent education for every child in America. Don’t be fooled by the special interests and the money of corporate America. Vote no on two.
