On the Nov. 8 ballot is a hotly-contested question having to do with the possible expansion of charter schools in Massachusetts. As members of the board of Martha’s Vineyard’s one and only charter school, we want to make sure that news coverage of the ballot issue doesn’t obscure a simple fact that is close to our hearts. For nearly two decades, what is known locally as The Charter School has faithfully served Island kids with outstanding teaching, a warm and supportive environment, and a dedication to mutual respect and democracy. All Vineyarders should be proud of this unique institution. When the dust settles on Tuesday, and when you return home from your polling places, we hope you will take a moment to learn more about our — and your — local charter school.
