Perhaps you missed going out on the Christmas Bird Count and are now kicking yourself. Well, there is another chance coming up to get out and about with nature while stalking, in a friendly fashion, those that take wing.

On Thursday, Jan. 12, Felix Neck is hosting a full moon owl prowl from 6 to 7 p.m. Sure it may be cold out in January, but at least it gets dark so early that you can go out under a full moon and still be in bed by 8 p.m. Not so easy during the summer months.

Owls on the wing are a quiet sort, they are hunting after all, so going out with an experienced guide is the way to go. It is also an opportunity to check out the night sky. The full moon on Thursday is called the Ice Moon, and it will be moving through the constellation Taurus. Also up there displayed prominently in the sky will be Mars and Venus, appearing low in the southwestern sky after sunset. Venus will be bright, Mars a dull red.

But it is owls we truly seek. Consider the ice moon a helpful spotlight on your way to the main event.
