On Dec. 27, the father and son team of Brocks Callen (they share the same name) headed out to sea on the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor for a three-week mission to map seamounts off the Johnston Atoll, deep in the Pacific Ocean. They joined the crew and some non-crew members including artists and educators to both observe and take part in the research.

Both Brocks know their way around the water. Brock senior is the executive director of SailMV, and Brock Jr. spends most of his time either on the ocean, in the ocean, or flying above it. He once kite boarded from the Vineyard to Block Island to raise awareness about environmental issues.

On Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. the men will discuss their expedition at the Black Dog Tavern, as part of the SailMV winter lecture series.

Prior to the trip, Brock senior expressed his excitement.

“I have a huge appreciation for and respect of the sea,” he said. “But for somebody my age who spent his entire life on the sea, to have the opportunity to learn so much more, is mind boggling.”

Prepare for the mind boggling on Wednesday, with a side of fries. Tickets are $25 and include dinner. For reservations, call 508-696-7644 or visit sailmv.org.
