The Martha’s Vineyard Detachment of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer an eight-session boating skills and seamanship course beginning Tuesday, April 11.

The course will meet on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. through May 30 at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.

Subjects include choosing a boat, equipping a boat, boat handling, aids to navigation, navigation rules, knots and lines, marine radio, and safety issues, among other things.

The course is approved by the Massachusetts Environmental Police. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, youths 12 to 15 years old are eligible to apply for licensure under state boating regulations so they may legally operate a power boat alone.

Pre-registration is required. While instruction is free, there is a $25 fee to cover charts and materials. For additional information and to reserve space contact auxiliary instructor Chris Scott at 774-930-0921.
