History is about the past, but that’s no reason it can’t live in the present moment too. At least that is the philosophy Phyllis Vecchia brings to the subject, literally.

For the past seven years, Ms. Vecchia has taught a Women in History Program for the sixth and eighth graders at the Tisbury School. In all, 28 classes were taught this year.

This year the sixth grade focused on Abigail Adams, Eleanor Roosevelt and Hillary Clinton. In addition to studying the life of each woman, classes include performances in costume. Becky Williams assisted on costume days, contributing her acting skills.

The eighth graders studied the life and times of Hillary Clinton, Eleanor Roosevelt, Phillis Wheatley, the women’s rights movements and the Suffragists. The program is paid for by the town of Tisbury, along with private funding and donors. Next up, Ms. Vecchia travels to the West Tisbury School to bring to life Abigail Adams, Phillis Wheatley, Elizabeth Blackwell and Amelia Bloomer.
