The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank’s annual cross-Island hike turns 25 this year. What better way to celebrate than a 25-mile trek across the Island?

The annual event falls on the first Saturday of June, also known as National Trails Day, and traverses conservation land and public properties.

This year’s trek on Saturday, June 3 begins at 8 a.m. at South Beach (left/east fork) and will end around 5:15 p.m. at Menemsha Beach, 25 miles total. A lunch break is planned about halfway through, 12:30 to 1 p.m., at the rear of the West Tisbury School.

The land bank advises hikers to wear study shoes, bring sunscreen or rain gear, insect repellent, and sufficient water. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome.

A complete schedule with planned checkpoints (for those who want to join up to complete part of the hike) is available at mvlandbank.com. Those that complete the entire hike will receive a certificate of accomplishment, and a well-earned chance to jump in the ocean at Menemsha.
