A small fire in the engine room of the freight ferry Governor was quickly extinguished Friday morning, boat line general manager Wayne Lamson said.

Mr. Lamson said the fire was discovered in one of three generators on the ferry and was put out by the chief engineer using a fire extinguisher. The incident occurred as the ferry was coming into port in Vineyard Haven. Passengers were evacuated and there was no further incident, he said, adding that the Tisbury fire department was called but little assistance was needed.

Mr. Lamson said chief engineer Carl Walker was on his way to Vineyard Haven on the Island Home to inspect the damage. Clearance from the Coast Guard will be needed before the ferry can operate again, but Mr. Lamson said he expected that to happen in short order.

“We should be good to go soon,” he said.
