Friday night the gibbous moon appears right above the bright planet Jupiter. The two are in the zodiacal constellation Virgo, a short distance away from the constellation’s brightest star star Spica. The moon and Jupiter will remain an impressive sight well into the evening. The evening begins with the two high in the southeastern sky a short time after sunset.
The full moon, the summer moon, takes place next Friday, June 9.
Rainfall
You didn’t need a rain gauge to know May was a wet month. Rainfall totals for the month totalled 6.47 inches at the National Weather Service cooperative weather station in Edgartown. That is well above the 3.54 inch average for the month. Evidence of a good wet spring are everywhere. Lawns are lush. The freshwater ponds and streams are full. Even the Island’s special vernal pools are near or overflowing.
