As high school athletes begin post season play, the boys baseball team topped the roster this week with a first-round win over Hanover, marking the first post-season win for the boys in 14 years.

“It was a big win for us, for sure,” head coach Gary Simmons said Friday after the 5-1 win Thursday night at home. The 13-7 boys are seeded 10th in the MIAA south section division three. Coach Simmons said pitcher Jonas Lukowitz was stellar on the mound, allowing four hits and one unearned run with four strikeouts and no walks.

The Vineyard got out in front in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two runs without a hit and taking advantage of a walk, a grounder to third, an errant throw and a wild pitch. Hanover scored its lone run in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth the Vineyard added three more runs.

The boys are scheduled to play Monday against the winner of the Coyle-Cassidy-Dedham game.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve won a playoff game,” Coach Simmons said. “The kids are very excited, I think they’re playing with a lot of confidence.”

Meanwhile, boys and girls tennis teams are both in post-season play. The defending state champion girls team played 16th-seed Fontonne Friday at home.

The boys were due to play Bourne in their next match.

The track team competes Saturday in the all-state track and field championships at Bridgewater State University. Mackenzie Condon, Ennis Foster, Whitney Schroeder, Olivia Smith and Pearl Vercruysse will represent the Vineyard high school.

In the Massachusetts Eastern Division 4 championships last weekend at the Norwell High School the Vineyard team made a strong showing.

Olivia Smith won the long jump and 100-meter high hurdles; Pearl Vercruysse won the mile; Mackenzie Condon came in second in 100-meter high hurdles and 400-meter low hurdles; Ennis Foster came in 3rd in the triple jump; and Whitney Schroeder came in 6th in javelin.
