In Vineyard Skies: Crescent Moon and Venus

On Thursday, there is a pretty sight in the early morning sky. The crescent moon and the bright planet Venus appear as a close pair in the southeastern sky. The two rise together well before sunrise.

This is one of those wonderful events that can inspire us all to get up early in the morning and take a peek outside. You don’t have to be a photographer to enjoy this event, seeing two dramatically different celestial objects side by side. We can watch the colors of dawn change the backdrop, from a dark purple to reds and yellows, and then the finality is really another beginning, sunrise.

The moon is stark, crater-covered, and near us. Venus is a cloud-covered planet millions of miles away. Yet the two appear together as friends, as colleagues, caught in their orbits. The moon circles around the Earth. Venus, like the other planets, is caught in an orbit around the sun.

The sight is pleasant on the morning before and after Thursday, but the moon is not so close to our planetary neighbor.
