Lillian Rose Walter and Ian Tucker Peach, both of Chappaquiddick, were married Sept. 16 in an early morning wedding on East Beach on Chappy.
The bride is the founder and owner of Slip Away Farm on Chappy, and the bridegroom is the newly-appointed superintendent of the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank. The two met on Slip Away’s farm stand when the bridegroom came to pick up his parents’ weekly CSA (community supported agriculture) share of vegetables from the farm. If it wasn’t love at first sight, it was pretty close.
Lillian, better known as Lily, is the daughter of Jan Pogue and the late John Walter of Chappaquidick and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Her parents founded Vineyard Stories, the Island’s publishing company, which closed after 11 years and 50-plus books last October. Ian is the eldest son of Laura and Stephen Peach, who have had a home on Chappy since 2009 and who also live in Jackson, N.H.
The couple was married by the bride’s older brother, Alexander Pogue of Arlington, who received certification from the commonwealth. Her younger brother, Christian Pogue Walter of Chappy and Asheville, N.C., prepared the brunch meal for 33 at the home of the bridegroom’s family’s Chappy house immediately after the beach ceremony, and then cooked a soup, salad and homemade bread dinner for 85 at the couple’s new home, purchased 16 days earlier, on Chappy that night.
Lily grew her own flowers at her farm, which were arranged by two Chappy friends. Her photographer and her assistant were the bride’s best friend from first grade. The three cakes prepared by her little brother were decorated with flowers by another close Chappy friend.
It was a deeply-felt family and friends’ wedding from beginning to end.
After the party that night, Lily and Ian (Lily still in her lace and chiffon wedding dress and Ian in the same blue suit his father had worn 35 years earlier at his own wedding) rode across the Chappy ferry to applause from the captain and first mate and strolled through Edgartown toward the Harbor View Hotel. They spent a night there before going on their honeymoon in Maine.
