Autumn weather has arrived, with temperatures in the low 30s during the night and reaching the high 60s during the day. The sunsets have been more intense than usual with deep hues of purple and pink. Due to the visit from Jose, some of the leaves have just turned brown and fallen to the ground due to the exposure to the salt mist. We anticipate at least a slight glimpse of foliage over the next few weeks. Chilmark Chocolates reopens this week.

Reminder, electronic disposal day on Oct. 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Community Services campus, next door to the YMCA. Scrap metal will also be taken. Discounts on a truck load or a car full of recyclables.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum presents The Art and Poetry of Dan Waters - A Living Legend on Monday Oct. 23 at 1:30 p.m. at the Howes House in West Tisbury. Up-Island museum docents Nancy Cabot, Bonnie George and Linda Vadasz will share Dan’s prints and his tools as well as read his poetry. Most Islanders know that Dan Waters is an accomplished print maker and poet but few understand precisely how Dan obtains inspiration and begins the creative process. The conversation will focus on participants own observations and inspirations of the beautiful Island we all share. Unfortunately, Dan is traveling and not able to join in but will be present in a short video reading his own work.

Congratulations to Sarah and Taylor Ives on the birth of their first child, a son, Louie Raymond Ives, born Oct. 3 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Louie is the grandson of Peter and Clare Ives of Old South Road.

Congratulations to Noah Manning as he was elected as one of the co-vice presidents of the West Tisbury School Student Council this past week. Noah and Tate Fairchild-Coppoletti are the co-vice presidents. Jack Carbon and Bryce Cioffi will be co-treasurers. Ingrid Moore and Delilah Hammerlund are co-presidents.
