In Vineyard Skies: First Quarter Moon

Friday night, the first quarter moon appears high in the sky after sunset. The moon is in the zodiacal constellation Capricornus, a mythological goat with horns. The stars in the constellation are no match for the brilliance of our celestial neighbor. That area of the sky is wide open and lacks any bright stars. The moon sets around midnight.

The moon will move on into the zodiacal constellation Pisces by midweek.

For trick or treaters on Halloween Night, Tuesday night, the bright gibbous moon is everyone’s friend as it appears higher, brighter and lightens the dark night sky. The moon is only a few days from full moon phase.

The Full moon, or Bay Scallop Moon, arrives at the end of the week.

The ringed-planet Saturn is our only evening planet. Saturn is low in the southwestern sky after sunset. It sets a short time later. Saturn is in the zodiacal constellation Scorpius, in an area of the sky just south of the constellation Ophiuchus. There is no brighter celestial object in that area of the sky.
