The West Tisbury and Chilmark local dropoffs are now accepting food waste. For $2, residents can dump up to a five-gallon bucket sized container. Acceptable items include fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains, pasta, bread, dairy, meat, seafood, coffee, filters, tea bags, napkins and paper towels.

The program is part of a larger commitment by the Martha’s Vineyard Refuse Disposal and Resource Recovery District to divert food waste from the municipal solid waste stream. Island Grown Initiative will pick up the food waste from the Chilmark and West Tisbury LDOs and compost it on local farms.

The Chilmark local dropoff is open Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The West Tisbury dropoff is open Sundays from 8 a.m. to noon, Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
