A Steamship Authority shuttle driver died suddenly Sunday afternoon while on the job, according to the boat line.

In a statement Monday the SSA said Jack Hayes was on duty at the Palmer avenue parking lot Sunday afternoon picking up passengers when he died suddenly.

The shuttle bus was stationary in the parking lot at the time of his death, which was around 3:30 p.m., according to the Steamship Authority.

Mr. Hayes had been with the SSA for about 10 years. “Jack was a consummate professional, courteous and kind,” the statement said. “To lose such a valuable member of our team is difficult. Our thoughts and sincerest sympathies are with his wife and two children at this time.”

A spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office said Monday that the matter remains under investigation, but there is nothing suspicious at the time.
