The winter is about to get a lot warmer, or at least a lot more creative, as the Yard began its winter series this weekend. On Saturday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. the Sandglass Theatre performs a puppet show and mask performance called Autumn Portraits.

The show began as a solo work by Eric Bass but then his daughter Soshana joined him. The result is a show that explores the themes of belonging and spiritual crisis not just through puppets, but also through their interactions with the puppet master. It is a creation of beauty and depth.

Sandglass has been on the Island for most of the week leading up to the performance, doing workshops in Island schools. There are also workshops open to the public on Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. All Sandglass events take place at The Artist Studio, 43 Pennywise Path, Edgartown.

On Monday, the Yard continues its winter programming by bringing in the French-Algerian choreographer Hervé Koubi along with his dance troupe, making their White Bird debut, which includes 12 dancers and combines capoeira, martial arts, and urban and contemporary dance. The show takes place at the Performing Arts Center at the regional high school, beginning at 7 p.m.

The Wonder Twins return on March 10, followed by Flor De Toloache on April 28.
