The West Tisbury sixth graders have been working hard in science class to create a bylaw to ban intentional release of helium or lighter than air balloons into the atmosphere in order to prevent litter and harm to wildlife. They managed to create the bylaw, create petitions, and get the bylaw to town meetings for a vote in Aquinnah, West Tisbury, and Oak Bluffs. Students learned about the process of presenting a bylaw by making banners, handing out flyers, and giving speeches. They spent weekends getting petitions signed across the Vineyard. Their bylaw passed on Tuesday evening in Aquinnah, and will now go to the attorney general’s office to become an official law in Aquinnah.
