I wanted to take the time to send a special "Thank you" for recognizing my Grandmother, Barbara (Houtman). She loved this island so much! The islanders, tourists, colleagues, down to her contributions to the NAACP, (which she made my cousin and I sing in their choir YEAR's ago LoL!!). My Grandmother was exceptional, and wore a crown of Grace. Her dedication here on Martha's Vineyard has been groundbreaking in history. Our family was so honored and proud of her in becoming the first Black and a WOMAN, to serve on the Board of Selectman in Oak Bluffs. She served two terms, and I do believe she was recognized either in Essence, or Jet Magazine back then. So yes, it is safe to say I DO take stock in always acknowledging such a remarkable woman. I miss her so much since her passing May 1, 2015. She was 91 yrs young. Her services were held here on the island, at Grace Episcopal Church. Of course she wouldn't have it any other way. My Family and I, we take Huge pride in honoring her legacy everyday. So from my Family and I, we would like to say a humbling "THANK YOU", in taking the time to remember who she was, and a Trailblazer alongside these other MAGNIFICENT WOMEN! #Cheers
