Phyllis Vecchia recently brought Abigail Adams, Eleanor Roosevelt and Hillary Clinton to the Vineyard for a four-month stay. Honest, didn’t you see these women wandering down Main street? Or maybe you noticed Harriet Beecher Stowe or Elizabeth Cady Stanton in the ferry line?

Well, even if you didn’t see these women, they were here in spirit, thanks to a history program created by Ms. Vecchia. She recently completed a four-month program at the Tisbury School teaching the sixth and eight grade classes, where students not just study important women, they become them, dressing in period costumes to fully immerse themselves in the lives of the women they are studying.

The program is paid for by the town of Tisbury, Rotary Club of Martha’s Vineyard, and private funding and donors.
