Summer will arrive soon and it is anticipated that summer temperatures will arrive as well in Aquinnah. It has been in the 50s and low 60s and not really beach weather.

Cliffhangers will feature music this evening by Ellen Biskis, Tauras Biskis and Christopher Carroll. Always a fun time while dining.

The Aquinnah Cultural Center is opening for the 13th season in the Vanderhoop Homestead on June 16 at 1 p.m. This year they have a new sign with a new moniker: the Aquinnah Wampanoag Indian Museum. They made this change so that visitors would know exactly what they are about.

The museum is a 125-year-old Wampanoag farmhouse near the Gay Head Cliffs. Exhibits and programs cover several centuries of Wampanoag history and culture, from ancient fossils found in the clay of the cliffs to modern-day tribal life. Exhibits include Wampanoag whaling, Gay Head clay pottery, Cranberry Day, farming and other aspects of 19th century life. They have expanded our gift shop as well.

The West Tisbury Library will host an archaeology I.D. day on June 16 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. On hand for the event will be archaeologists Jim Richardson, Dick Burt, James Tuck, Jill Bouck, Duncan Caldwell of Aquinnah, and Bill Moody, as well as paleontologist Fossil Fred Hotchkiss. They will be happy to answer any questions about the archaeology of Martha’s Vineyard.

Where can you get fresh, healthy food at affordable prices? Did you know that the gleaners for Island Grown Initiative provide 20,000 pounds of food to the elderly, disabled and low-income people on the Island? Did you know there is a summer food program for needy children and that members of the Federated Church volunteer to support that program? Rebecca Haag from IGI will be the guest speaker on Sunday, June 17, at 11:30 a.m., following the morning service at the Federated Church Meetinghouse.
