The Steamship Authority canceled two early morning ferry trips Sunday because of mechanical issues with the freight ferry Governor.

The ferry was quickly cleared by the Coast Guard to return to service.

According to a statement by SSA communications director Sean Driscoll, the chief engineer on board the Governor found a broken wire on a sensor while investigating an alarm on the reduction gear feedback monitoring system. Maintenance staff came on board and reconnected the wire, and the propulsion system was tested and found to be operational, he said. The Coast Guard then cleared the ferry to return to service.

The Governor’s 5:30 a.m. trip from Woods Hole and 6:30 a.m. return from Vineyard haven were canceled. Mr. Driscoll said some vehicles were moved to the 6 a.m. Island Home trip and a crew was brought in to run extra trips with the freight ferry Sankaty.
