Rain, glorious rain! It was a great call on Saturday when we had some glorious rain showers and a little thunder and lightning. The plants and ground have been screaming for it. Unfortunately it was not enough but it was still a good thing.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Ryan Lauriano, who celebrated July 28; Chloe Cook and Théoden Dias, July 30; Guilherme Silva, July 31; Cassidy Kelleher and Nolan Murphy, August 1; and to Chimari Dockery and Marsha Stewart who celebrate their day Friday, August 3.

I can’t believe it is August. This is the month that flies by and is busy. Illumination, the fair and of course the fireworks; it is like the grand finale of the summer but one that everyone looks forward to.

It is also a change in the people. The July renters are making their sad exit and the excited August people are arriving. It is a big difference and the stores are all in prep waiting for the new arrivals.

The highly anticipated 11th annual Edgartown House Tour and Tea will take place on Tuesday, August 7 at 1:30 p.m. with historian Mary Jane Carpenter’s presentation at the Federated Church Meetinghouse about the historical importance of the homes on tour. Then we will tour three classic New England homes on North Water street, Morse street and Cottage street. After a private viewing of The Carnegie, tea will be served in a backyard waterfront garden overlooking Edgartown Harbor and Chappaquiddick. Tickets are available in advance at ticketsmv.com/tour or may be purchased the day of the event at the Federated Church Meetinghouse and at The Carnegie. For more information call 508-627-4421, or email officefederatedchurchmv@gmail.com.

As a past horseback rider, I have been asked to remind drivers that, when they see a horse and rider on the side of the road or trying to cross the road, you should pass them slowly and give them room as you pass. They may be calm as you approach but something could always spook the horse and you may be too close. So, for the safety of the rider and horse – and even you as the driver – please give them room and slow down.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
